Car Failures
Sometimes what seems like a really good idea just doesn’t work, and this is true of some of the most innovative cars that have ever been invented.
Take the DeLorean for example. Although it is now much loved thanks to the Back to the Future films, the cars were designed to be an ethical sports car, and therefore failed. It more often than not failed to start, and there were problems with the gull wing doors opening, so all in all it was a monumental failure.
The Edsel was in step with a lot of the other designs of the fifties, but sadly for this particular car it looked a bit weird for commercial sales, and hit the market during an economic recession, meaning that few people invested. The economic slump slowed down the sale of mid priced cars and it stopped being produced within two years of its initial design.
Chryslers brainchildren, the Plymouth and the Dodge also had a slump as they were invented in the time when downsizing was frowned upon when it came to cars.
The cars flopped and the designer was fired.
The AMC pacer, designed in the late seventies, had a rounded body, a weird hatchback with no boot and really larger windows, and was deemed to be ‘Americas first wide small car’ a market that didn’t really need to be filled! It didn’t meet emission and fuel mileage rules, and was trashed after a short production history.
The Yugo GV was from a plant where they made Fiats, and was supposed to be popular thanks to being the cheapest car on the market at the time. it was slow to power up and was scarily crashable, and was ditched after five years.
The Suzuki X-90 was designed to be Suzuki’s sports car offering, but teemed with a really uncomfortable ride and no boot space, the fact that you couldn’t see any of the buttons in the dark made it unpopular with customers, and it only lasted twenty four months in the late nineties.
